All tenancy contracts in the Emirate of Dubai which have a duration of at least one year and not more than ten years must be registered upon conclusion and cancelled upon termination in the so-called EJARI system. The EJARI system is maintained by the Real Estate Regulatory Agency (RERA), which is the authority responsible for tenancy-related matters. The EJARI registration is, amongst others, a prerequisite to connect utilities, such as water and electricity. Also, an EJARI registration must be presented when sponsoring family members for residence visas or in order to file a case before the Rental Disputes Center, i.e. the competent court for tenancy-related disputes in the Emirate of Dubai.
